Infill Project Buffalo NY
15 Unit Infill Project
This 15-unit new build is a nationally recognized model of sustainability, combining cutting-edge green technologies to achieve exceptional energy efficiency. Featuring a geothermal well, a 64 kW solar array, cold climate air source heat pumps (ccASHP), and a robust building envelope with high-performance insulation and airtight construction, the project sets a new standard for eco-conscious design. Honored with a National Award for Sustainability, it exemplifies the future of housing by reducing emissions, optimizing energy use, and providing high-quality, environmentally friendly living spaces.

Robust Building Envelop
In cold climates, Passive House building principles are crucial for creating energy-efficient, comfortable buildings. These principles focus on airtight construction, high-performance insulation, and superior windows, minimizing heat loss and reducing energy costs. In urban areas, geothermal wells provide a sustainable, renewable energy source by utilizing the Earth's stable underground temperatures. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and decreases emissions. For urban communities, geothermal energy is vital for reducing dependence on central heating systems, offering energy independence, and supporting sustainability goals. Together, Passive House principles and geothermal wells help create resilient, eco-friendly buildings in challenging environments
Solar Gain and Savings
The 64 kW solar array plays a pivotal role in enhancing the sustainability of the project by generating clean, renewable energy that significantly offsets the building's electricity demand. This large-scale solar installation helps reduce the overall carbon footprint, lower energy bills, and contribute to a net-zero energy goal.

To ensure equitable energy distribution, we implemented master metering for the project, allowing us to manage and distribute the solar-generated power to all tenants effectively. This system enables the solar energy to be shared across the entire building, maximizing the benefits of the solar array. Each tenant receives a portion of the energy generated, lowering their individual utility costs and promoting energy equity. By using master metering, we ensure that all tenants have access to clean, affordable energy, supporting both environmental and financial sustainability.
